The History of Greenzy

L'Histoire de Greenzy

Greenzy was born from the shared vision of three young engineers, Adélaïde, Fiona and Laetitia, who decided to take on a challenge faced by many households: composting in winter. This innovative startup was born in February 2017, when these students began to think about a sustainable solution for composting indoors, even during the coldest months.

2017-2019: From Idea to Design

The idea for Greenzy was born in February 2017. Adélaïde and Laetitia, who had met in Dublin during a language trip, shared a common passion for ecological projects. While they were still students, they had the opportunity to work on a startup project as part of their engineering studies. The choice to create a domestic composter came from a collective reflection, inspired by the difficulties encountered by Fiona's mother, who struggled to compost in winter.

In October 2017, the founders joined the Yncubator incubator in Louvain-La-Neuve, a decisive turning point that allowed them to structure their idea. In 2018, they developed their first prototype of a composter using aerobic composting technology. In 2019, they decided to dedicate themselves full-time to the project, collaborating with partners such as Quimesis for the engineering and Vocsens for the sensors, which resulted in a second, more advanced prototype.

2020-2021: Birth of Greenzy SRL and Crowdfunding Success

In 2020, Greenzy reached a milestone by becoming a limited liability company (SRL). Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the company was officially established in June, also marking the launch of the Greenzy app, an essential tool for tracking and optimizing composting.

In 2021, the design of the composter was finalized, and a patent was filed. In November, Greenzy launched a crowdfunding campaign with resounding success: 127 composters sold and 55,000 euros collected, reaching 275% of the initial objective. This success was crowned by the Be Circular award, recognizing Greenzy for its contribution to the Brussels circular economy.

2022: Expansion and New Challenges

2022 marked the official launch of the Greenzy composter, with a working prototype that met the expectations of the first users. Greenzy continued to make a name for itself, notably by winning the SE'nSE award, a financial support for sustainable startups.

Greenzy also participated in key events such as the Batibouw fair, where it presented its innovation to a wider audience, including potential investors. This year was a period of consolidation and optimization of the product, marking a turning point in the company's history.

2023: Growth and Recognition

In 2023, Greenzy continued its growth, strengthening its market presence and perfecting its composter to better meet consumer needs. The startup was recognized by the Hub Awards in the “Start” category, confirming its status in green innovation. Greenzy also maintained a strong presence on social media, sharing its journey milestones and successes.

Towards the Future: A Sustainable Vision

Greenzy continues to innovate to make composting accessible to everyone, even in urban and indoor environments. With a deep commitment to the environment, the company aims to simplify organic waste management for an increasingly wide audience.
