How does the composter work?

What to put in the composter?

All your organic waste except for bones, shells and stones because they decompose very very slowly as well as meat which carries diseases!

But what is organic waste?
These are your vegetable and fruit peels, your leftover food, dry bread, expired food, your eggshells, but also your used handkerchiefs and paper towels, …

Don’t be afraid, even vegetable litter, citrus fruits like lemons and oranges can be composted!

What we cannot put:
Plastic, metal, cardboard, glass …
In short, everything that does not degrade easily 😉

The steps of operation of the composter

Anytime you have organic waste:

  1. Fill the composter with your organic waste
  2. Operate the crank (which crushes and mixes at the same time)
  3. Follow the steps indicated on the application

The application will guide you by giving you advice on how to use the composter.
The sensors located in the compost monitor it so that you have good compost and above all, no odor!

The waste composting cycle takes about 2 months.
Of course as it is a continuous cycle, you will obtain soil continuously and you will have to recover it from time to time…. but luckily the app will be there to remind you! 😉

What if I don’t have a smartphone to download the app?

No worries, the application also has a web version which is available with a computer!

What comes out of the composter? And in what quantity?

Our composter follows the same principle as the composting which is done in the back of the garden. So you will get potting soil, a good fertilizer for plants 😉

The amount of potting soil will depend on your amount of organic waste.
We therefore estimate it to be 1 bucket of potting soil every 3 months for 4 to 5 people using the composter. It should be taken into account that from one family to another the production of organic waste is variable and that we use the average in Belgium.

How much time does it take?

About 2 months.

Thanks to the indoor temperature, your composter is in good condition to compost quickly. In addition, the shredder allows you to reduce your organic waste into pieces easily attacked by microorganisms!
The mixer comes to finish the work by allowing a good aeration but also a homogenization of the material which favors its degradation.

This process is accelerated compared to the compost in the garden (which takes between 6 to 12 months) thanks to all the steps, you will get potting soil after 2 months.

How come it doesn't stink?

The composting process we use is aerobic composting, that is, in the presence of oxygen. This composting process does not emit any odours! In order to achieve aerobic composting, i.e. in the presence of oxygen and therefore without odours, air enters the composter via a fan. In order to avoid the smell of waste that has just been thrown away or the smell of undergrowth due to the soil, we have integrated a carbon filter. The latter filters the air coming in (to prevent odours from escaping) and going out.

The activated carbon in the odour filter must be replaced after 4 to 6 months and will cost between 10 and 20 euro per year. They will be available on our website but also in shops. Used charcoal pellets can be composted.

We also suggest that you add a scoop of compost (from your composter) from time to time after adding organic waste. In addition to avoiding odors, the soil will bring new organic waste bacteria and microorganisms beneficial to their decomposition!

What if you have too much or not enough soil?

Don’t panic, the app will help you!
The application will allow you to receive or give soil to someone in your neighborhood. You just have to indicate the district in which you live and if you want to give or receive soil and the application takes care of the matching! 🙂

You can also find a neighborhood vegetable patch, a local farmer, or even a community initiative where you can donate or use your soil.

Do you have to add additives? Are there earthworms?

No, only the micro-organisms naturally present in your organic waste will degrade everything! The composter will operate independently with only your daily organic waste input.

What to do if there is a problem with the composter?

The application detects a defective sensor, you observe a problem with the mixer, …

No problem, the application offers you several tutorials to replace / repair defective parts. When it is not possible to replace / repair yourself, find a date using our appointment calendar so that an expert can come and help you ASAP!

What to do at the end of the composter’s life?
We have an end-of-life compost bin recovery system. We unite several end-of-life composters in order to give them a new life and to sell reconditioned composters afterwards.

What if I go on vacation?

No worries, you can stop filling the composter and resume the cycle without consequences.

Is it suitable for children?

Sure ! Children will have the opportunity to understand the life cycle of organic matter from the plate to the garden. Sorting organic waste becomes a fun family activity.
Composting is child’s play with Greenzy ! 😉

Do we need knowledge about composting?

The application will allow you to guide you in the use of the composter. So you don’t need any knowledge about composting.
She will give you advice and indications in order to manage the state of the compost, to have a quality compost and no odor problem.

What are the specifications of the composter?

Colours: Anthracite grey, wood colour
Materials: Wood, anthracite recycled plastic
Dimensions :W.35,0 x H.85,0 x D.35,0 cm
Volume: 50 L,
Electricity consumption (collectors and fan): 2W = 17.52 kWh/year (equivalent to the consumption of a coffee machine connected continuously but not used, i.e. the equivalent of more or less 2 euros over the year).

Should the composter be attached to the wall?

The composter must be hung on the wall with 3 screws.

When we tested the prototype, the testers came back to us with a stability problem during the mixing stage. To ensure a better composting experience we wanted to address this problem.
It also saves you a lot of expense by eliminating a heavy part that would stabilise the product.
If this is a deal breaker for you, we would be interested in your feedback.
Would it be possible to send us an e-mail to info@greenzy.be?
Thanks in advance!

Can the composter be placed in a cellar?

The room temperature of the house is the ideal temperature for decomposition. If it is lower, this will slow down the degradation time but will not prevent proper decomposition. The capacity of the composter has been sized for 4 people with a decomposition time of two months. So if this time is longer, less organic waste can be put in continuously, but otherwise everything will work the same.

Can the composter be placed outside?

It is not intended for outdoor use as the temperature inside is necessary for the composter to function properly. This allows for a stable and continuous room temperature, which is the right temperature for the development of the micro-organisms necessary for the decomposition process. Without this, it is not possible to compost in about 2 months. However, it can be placed elsewhere than in the kitchen, for example in the scullery or in the living room.

And at the ecology level?

Where do the composter materials come from?

We pay particular attention to the origin of our raw materials.
Most of our materials come from Belgium. If we cannot find our materials of good enough quality in Belgium, we will look for them in Europe.

What is the life cycle of the composter?

We have an end-of-life compost bin recovery system. We unite several end-of-life composters in order to give them a new life and to sell reconditioned composters afterwards. When the material is plastic, it is recycled and recyclable!

What is the environmental impact I make by composting?

5 people who compost, avoid, per year, the equivalent of the pollution of a car!

You save half of your trash from being transported by truck, which pollutes a lot! In addition, only 6% of organic waste is composted, the rest is buried or incinerated …
The composter makes it possible to avoid this production of CO2 while returning the minerals to the earth, improving its nutritive capacity and therefore the biodiversity of the garden. Want to know more ? Read our article on the subject here !

What is the price?

Local origin

We pay particular attention to the origin of our raw materials.
Most of our materials come from Belgium. If we cannot find our materials of good enough quality in Belgium, we will look for them in Europe.

Quality product and durable over time

In order to have a quality product that can last over time, we choose our materials from producers recognized for their quality and who share the same values as us.

Recycled and recyclable materials

When the material is plastic, it is recycled. This means that this plastic has a new life and that it comes from plastic waste.
In addition, our plastic is recyclable. This plastic has the chemical properties to be reused. However, before remelting unusable materials, we give a second life to our end-of-life composters and recondition them by assembling several end-of-life composters.

You will even receive a bonus by returning your composter to us at the end of its life!
